As a young researcher, Piotr Eggert, starts to study a new berry - the aronia. The work is carried out at the Warsaw Forestry Research Institute to increase biodiversity. In 1978 Piotr Eggert and Maria Cichowicz publish the first article on Polish aronia berries. Thus officially begins the history of the black
aronia in Poland.
The best plants are currently being tested to establish a nursery. Nero, a low-bushy, high-yielding variety that is difficult to propagate, is being selected. Despite the historical turmoil, Piotr and Krystyna Eggert establish the first private nursery in the Łowicz region. Paweł Eggert is also born.
The nursery changes location. The heart of the nursery starts beating in the Goszczyn commune of Mazovia. The first nursery rootstock is born, from which further selections are still made today. The process of selecting the best specimens is repeated for up to 10 years. In the late 1990s, production and sales of cuttings increase rapidly, and Poland becomes the world leader in aronia acreage.
The company celebrates its 30th anniversary with the publication of the book "Aronia From Cutting to Harvest". The growing guide quickly finds admirers and is translated into many languages: English, German, Croatian and even Korean. Aronia Eggert will become a centre of information and development in the aronia sector. It is also a destination for many visitors from all over the world.
Paweł Eggert, a biotechnologist and Master of Science in Horticulture, joins the team permanently. The export department, which he heads, gains momentum. After a few years, foreign sales account for over 80% of the company's turnover. The export department he heads is getting up to speed. At the same time, in collaboration with Professor Iwona Wawer of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Warsaw, a book on the health-promoting properties of aronia superfruits is written.
In response to many requests for aronia products, Pawel Eggert is taking up the challenge by starting the wholesale production of preserves in a B2B processing plant. The main product is organic NFC juice. The supply chain is merged. Year on year, production increases by more than 100%, and the product range steadily expands. The premium preparations are distributed to foreign customers as private labels.
After more than 45 years of work by Piotr Eggert, the first aronia variety, 'Nero Eggert,' is registered in Poland. It is one of the few in the world with such a long and documented selection. The premiere took place during an international conference co-organised by Aronia Eggert: Aronia Innovation Conference 2022. 'Nero Eggert' is becoming a globally recognized licensed flagship.
